About the Course

This interactive case-based course provides practitioners with the skills required to care for patients undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), with a focus on pharmacotherapeutic management throughout the transplant process.

The target audience for this course includes pharmacists, pharmacy student and residents, physicians (including residents and hematology/oncology fellows), advanced practice providers and nurses.

Overall Conference Educational Objectives

After attending the 2018 Fundamentals of HCT Training Course, participants should be able to:

  1. Review the advantages and disadvantages of available strategies for stem cell mobilization.
  2. Recognize the pharmacologic properties and toxicity profiles of autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) preparative regimens.
  3. Outline the approximate timeline and management of peri-engraftment complications following autologous HCT.
  4. Select management strategies for infectious complications following autologous HCT.
  5. Recall the pharmacologic properties and toxicity profiles of allogeneic HCT preparative regimens.
  6. Describe how population pharmacokinetic models are used to support busulfan therapeutic drug monitoring and achievement of desired outcomes in HCT patients receiving busulfan.
  7. Define sinusoidal obstructive syndrome (SOS) and outline risk factors, prevention strategies, and treatment modalities for SOS.
  8. Discuss patient-specific considerations for special populations undergoing autologous or allogeneic HCT.
  9. Examine the pathophysiology of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and available prophylactic approaches to prevent GVHD.
  10. Review treatment options for steroid-refractory GVHD in allogeneic HCT patients.
  11. Recognize risk factors, diagnostic criteria, and appropriate treatment strategies associated with transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA).
  12. Select a prophylactic and treatment strategy for common viral infections in HCT patients.
  13. Outline the incidence of invasive fungal infections in HCT patients and describe strategies for prophylaxis, empiric therapy, and treatment of documented fungal infections.
  14. Describe risk factors, prevention strategies, treatment strategies, and common long-term complications of chronic GVHD.
  15. Explain the rationale for immunizations in the HCT patient population and identify a post-HCT immunization program for HCT patients.
