Umbilical Cord Transplantation: State of the Science
2008 ASBMT Online Seminar
John E. Wagner, MD
Blood and Marrow Transplant Program
University of Minnesota
Objectives: On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of umbilical cord blood (UCB) transplantation and the 15th anniversary of cord blood banking, Dr. Wagner of the University of Minnesota has prepared a review of UCB for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Using extensive documentation collected from the literature and the accumulated experience at Minnesota, Dr. Wagner shows that UCB transplantation now can be considered a first line choice in treatment of pediatric acute leukemias. In some instances UCB transplants have advantages for adult patients. Two-unit compared to one-unit transplants in adults can produce important results. Outcome prediction for UCB can be made on the basis of HLA match, cell dose, and recipient age.
