What is the ASBMT

The American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation is a national professional association that promotes advancement of the field of blood and bone marrow transplantation. ASBMT members are both in clinical practice and in research.

Only recently have health professionals in the BMT field had an organization that focuses exclusively on their clinical and research interests. Previously they have had to rely on more general medical and scientific organizations.

From its beginning, ASBMT activities have been in seven broad areas, representing the interests of transplanters in interactions with government, private agencies and industry:

Research
Fostering research and development of transplantation both as a science and a therapy.

Representation
Responding to and representing multiple medical and scientific disciplines involved in blood and marrow transplantation. Chief among these disciplines are oncology, hematology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pediatrics and internal medicine.

Clinical Standards
Defining commonly accepted medical practice and developing standards of medical care for autologous and allogeneic transplants that can be used as guidelines for transplant centers and for professional training in blood and marrow transplantation.

Regulation
Conducting and coordinating analyses for effective regulation of autologous and allogeneic transplantation.
